T.C. Matherne is an American film and television actor. He began his performance career in improvisational theater before transitioning to on-screen roles. Matherne is best known for his portrayal of Master Sergeant Hendricks in the monster film Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and for playing Logan in season 3 of HBO’s True Detective (2019). He also appeared as Purcell in the horror-thriller Antebellum (2020) and as Kyle, a bullied police officer, in the horror-comedy Renfield (2023). In 2025, he portrayed Billy Moran in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit during the show’s 26th season.
Early life and improv background
Matherne was born and raised in southern Louisiana, in the Baton Rouge area. He developed an interest in performance through improvisational comedy, which he pursued in Chicago. After gaining experience, he returned to Baton Rouge and co-founded the Leather Apron Theatre Company (LATCo.) to develop a local improv scene. LATCo produced regular long-form improv shows and taught workshops; however, it closed in the early 2020s due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Career
Early roles
Matherne made his first on-screen appearance with a guest role as Nathan Kelly on NCIS: New Orleans in 2014. He continued to audition while maintaining his improvisational work.
Breakthrough and film work (2018–2023)
In 2018, Matherne was cast in the Hulu science-fiction drama The First, appearing as Jason, a personal assistant to corporate executive Laz Ingram (Natascha McElhone).That same year, he took on a recurring role as Jeremy in the Marvel series Cloak & Dagger.
Matherne gained broader recognition in 2019 with a part on HBO’s True Detective (season 3), portraying Logan, a young man who provides information to detectives investigating a missing persons case.He also played Master Sgt. Hendricks in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a member of the Monarch tactical team.
In 2020, Matherne portrayed Sam—the main antagonist—in the Lifetime television movie Ann Rule's A Murder to Remember. He also appeared in the horror-thriller Antebellum as Purcell, a Confederate soldier in the film’s Civil War-era storyline.
In 2023, Matherne played a bullied police officer named Kyle in the horror-comedy Renfield.
Subsequent television roles
On television, Matherne guest-starred as a conman in one episode of Leverage: Redemption (2021), appeared as Albert in The Underground Railroad (2021), and portrayed Lenny in one episode of the Apple TV+ crime miniseries Black Bird (2022).In 2025, he had a guest-starring role as Billy Moran in the 26th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and also played a character named Tom in an episode of Found.
Matherne was originally cast in season 1 of the Showtime series Your Honor but did not appear after contracting COVID-19.
