Tyler Sugiyama (born December 11, 1990) is an American entrepreneur and former collegiate basketball player. He is the founder and chief executive officer of AIR-A, a private media company focused on global content production and distribution in news, sports and entertainment.[1] Prior to founding AIR-A, Sugiyama worked in global banking and markets at financial institutions including J.P. Morgan and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, specializing in structured products and capital markets.[2]

Early life and basketball career

Sugiyama was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in the surrounding area.[1] He played AAU basketball for Larry Butler's Illinois Warriors and attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, where he was recognized as a point guard prospect and participated in elite showcase events such as the Pangos and Reebok All-American camps.

From 2009 to 2013, Sugiyama was a member of the University of Southern California Trojans men's basketball team, playing as a guard.[3] He primarily served as a reserve and practice contributor on teams that included future professional players such as Nik Vucevic, Dewayne Dedmon, Bryce Dejean-Jones and Byron Wesley.[4]

Education

Sugiyama attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics with a minor in business.

Career

Finance

After graduating from USC, Sugiyama began his career in finance at J.P. Morgan in roles related to markets and client coverage.[2] In 2015, he joined Bank of America Merrill Lynch BofA Securities, in New York. Over roughly eight years at the firm, he advanced into director-level positions within global banking and markets, focusing on securitized products, institutional clients and structured financial solutions.[2]

AIR-A

In 2023, Sugiyama founded AIR-A (also referred to as AIR-A Network), a private media company that develops, produces and distributes content across news, sports and entertainment.[1] The company positions itself as a premium, membership-based network aimed at athletes, executives and other professionals seeking greater control over their intellectual property, media presence and distribution.[1] AIR-A emphasizes technology-driven production and streaming, including support for high-definition and 4K formats, and presents itself as an alternative to traditional broadcast television and mainstream streaming platforms.[1]

Sugiyama serves as chief executive officer and leads overall strategy, partnerships and platform development.[1] Under his leadership, AIR-A has developed an expanding slate of original and co-produced programming, including sports, lifestyle and business-oriented content.[1]

Advisers and leadership

AIR-A has assembled a leadership and advisory group drawn from finance, media and sports.[1] Former Bank of America Merrill Lynch equity sales trader Greg Dixon has been reported in a partner or chief operating role, contributing to business strategy and operations.[1] The platform’s legal and business affairs are supported by media and entertainment counsel responsible for matters such as distribution agreements, sponsorships, intellectual property, name–image–likeness and compliance.[1]

On the creative and production side, AIR-A works with industry professionals in live and studio sports production, cinematography and original content development. These collaborators contribute to show design, live event coverage and scripted or documentary-style projects for the network’s distribution channels.[1]

Sports and talent advisory

AIR-A includes an athlete-focused advisory function as part of its content strategy. In June 2024, the company announced that 10-year NBA veteran Dewayne Dedmon had been appointed head of player advisory and become an investor in the network.[5] In this role, Dedmon helps guide the development of athlete-focused programming and serves as a link between professional players and the network’s production initiatives.[5] Through this role, AIR-A promotes itself as a platform where athletes can explore careers in broadcasting, commentary and executive production while maintaining control over their personal brands.[1]

On-air division and original production

AIR-A has announced plans for an on-air division featuring hosts, analysts and commentators across sports, news and culture.[6] The network has moved into original production, with personnel dedicated to development, casting and packaging of shows.[7] These roles include identifying on-screen talent, structuring original series and coordinating with external partners for distribution and co-production opportunities.[8]

In addition to studio formats, AIR-A has promoted projects such as test footage and early-stage film or series concepts, with plans for extended cuts or related content to appear on major streaming services alongside availability within the AIR-A ecosystem.[9]

Streaming applications and distribution

In the mid-2020s, AIR-A introduced a first-generation streaming application for connected televisions and streaming devices, expanding from a web-based presence to a living-room viewing experience.[10] The application is distributed through major app marketplaces, including the Google Play store, where it is available as the "AIR-A Network" Android app for phones, tablets and Android TV–based devices.[11] The app has been presented as a gateway to the private AIR-A network and is promoted as being accessible in numerous countries.[1]

The company’s distribution strategy combines its proprietary applications with placements on external platforms, allowing selected AIR-A-branded content and collaborations to appear on wider streaming services while retaining a core, members-only offering.[1]

Other activities

In 2008, Sugiyama served as a Congressional Page in the United States House of Representatives.
