Life and career

Early life

Wang was born on December 29, 2000 in Hangzhou, China. At 15 years-old, she was featured on the cover of a Chinese student magazine.[3] She graduated in Traditional Dance from the Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art.[4]

2018–2021: Produce 48 and debut with Everglow

In 2018, Wang competed in the South Korean reality show Produce 48 as a trainee of Yuehua Entertainment alongside labelmates Kim Si-hyeon and Choi Ye-na.[5] She was eliminated from the show in episode 11, finishing in 28th place.[6]

In February 2019, Wang was revealed as a member of Yuehua Entertainment's future girl group Everglow.[7] On March 21, 2019, Wang made her musical debut within Everglow on the music show M Countdown, following the release of the single album Arrival of Everglow and its title track "Bon Bon Chocolat".[8]

On September 27, 2020, during the promotion period of Everglow's single "La Di Da", Wang appeared as a guest on SBS' variety show Running Man.[9]

2022–present: Solo activities and debut in China

In January 2022, after controversy surrounding her, Yuehua Entertainment announced that Wang would take a break from Everglow's activities to return to China for family and academic reasons.[10] Throughout the year, she modeled for clothing brands and performed appearances on different Chinese television shows: Star Chaser, The Mews, and Street Dance of China.[11][12][13]

On August 31, 2022, Wang released her first digital single in Chinese, "Call Call".[2] In late 2022, she returned to South Korea and resumed her activities with Everglow.[14] On March 19, 2023, she attended the 2023 Seoul Fashion Week.[15]

Controversies

Chinese greeting in South Korea

On January 2, 2022, Everglow held a fan signing event in South Korea. To greet her fans, Yiren made a gesture with her hands, common and respectful in Chinese culture, in contrast to the deep bows of the other five members of the group. A video of the event was spread in the media, triggering criticism from Korean netizens, who demanded that Yiren "return to her native country". Following this, Yuehua Entertainment announced a temporary suspension of Yiren's activities with the group.[17]
