Zhang Xu Zhan is an artist and animator from Taipei, Taiwan. He creates paper puppets of animals using paper mache then adds beads and other materials to decorate the figures. And he uses these characters in stop motion films on sets that he creates himself. He keeps to the theme of old Taiwanese folk tales as inspiration for the stories he tells within the films. Through these stories and songs he creates a universal language that communicates the Taiwanese folk stories to the world.
Zhang comes from a family of paper artists in Taiwan. He has won awards for his films including the Deutsche Bank Artists of the Year Award 2021 and the Best Animated Short Film at the Taiwan Golden Horse Film Award in 2022.[1]
